Will it work on my device?
For now, Tracing Ace is for iPhone and iPad only, from Apple’s App Store. It works on iPhones and iPads running iOS or iPadOS 15 or newer, which covers most from the last several years: iPhone 6s or newer, and iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4, iPad (5th generation) or newer, and every iPad Pro.
Not sure which version you have? Open the Settings app, tap General, then About, and look at the line that says iOS Version (on an iPad, iPadOS Version). Any number from 15 up is fine.
Tracing Ace fills the screen sideways, so turn your iPhone or iPad on its side. You can draw with a finger, or with an Apple Pencil on an iPad that supports one. The bigger screen of an iPad gives more room to draw, but iPhones work too.
What about Android, Chromebooks and other devices?
We plan to bring Tracing Ace to Android, on the Google Play store, in the coming months, and to Chromebooks and more after that. We’re releasing the iPhone and iPad version first so we can get it right before we launch the next one. Stay tuned, or write to us and we’ll let you know when it’s ready.
One thing to know in advance: Apple’s App Store and Google Play are separate stores, so a subscription bought on one doesn’t carry over to the other. Family Sharing works within each one.
What's free, and what's the subscription?
One drawing in every pack is free to trace, and the Gallery is yours whatever you choose. An optional subscription opens every drawing, plus new ones as Peter adds them. Grown-ups find it under the gear on the title screen, then For grown-ups.
I already subscribed, but the drawings are locked
Open the gear, then For grown-ups, and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure the device is signed in to the same Apple Account that subscribed. Once the app has confirmed a subscription it keeps working offline.
Does one subscription cover the family?
Yes, on Apple devices. With Family Sharing set up, everyone in the family group gets it on their own iPhones and iPads, and all your own devices signed in to the same Apple Account do too. It won’t carry over to an Android device when that version arrives, because that’s a different store.
How do I cancel or change plans?
In your Apple Account settings: on iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Or in the app, open the gear, For grown-ups, then Manage subscription. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep access until the end of the period you paid for.
Can I get a refund?
Apple handles payments and refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Where are drawings kept?
Every finished drawing is saved automatically in the app’s Gallery, on the iPhone or iPad you drew it on. It stays there when you close the app, turn the device off, or update the app, and it stays yours even if a subscription ends.
Drawings aren’t uploaded anywhere and there are no accounts, so each drawing lives only on its own device. To keep a copy somewhere else, open it in the Gallery and tap Save to put it in your Photos.
Do drawings sync between my iPhone and iPad?
No. Tracing Ace doesn’t use iCloud, so a drawing made on your iPad stays on your iPad, and one made on your iPhone stays there. Each device has its own Gallery. Your subscription does work on all your devices signed in to the same Apple Account; it’s only the drawings that stay put.
To move a drawing to another device, save it to Photos. If you use iCloud Photos, it then appears in Photos on your other devices too.
Will I lose drawings if I delete the app?
Yes. Deleting Tracing Ace deletes its Gallery, and reinstalling it starts with an empty one. Save any favourites to Photos first.
If you only need the space, use Offload App instead: open Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage), tap Tracing Ace, then Offload App. That removes the app but keeps your drawings, and they’re back when you reinstall it.
A drawing disappeared
We’re sorry. We can’t restore drawings, since we never have a copy. But please tell us your device and what you were doing when it happened: the app doesn’t report anything to us, so your description is the only way we can look into whether something in the app caused it.
The pencil skips or the line lags
Send the device model and its iOS or iPadOS version.
Teachers and schools
Can I use Tracing Ace in my classroom? We’d love that, and it’s built to suit a classroom. There are no student accounts or logins, it collects no information about anyone, it works without an internet connection once installed, and it’s fine on a shared iPad — drawings stay on that device. Nothing is graded or scored.
How should a school buy it? We want to make this as easy as we can, and we’re still working out the best way for schools. Some buy apps through Apple School Manager, some manage devices with an MDM system, and some need a purchase order or a quote. Rather than guess, we’d like to hear what works for you.
Does it work on Chromebooks? Not yet. Chromebooks are on our list, and hearing from schools that use them helps us decide what to do next.
Please write to us and tell us:
- your school or district, and the age group you teach;
- which devices your students use (iPads, Chromebooks, Android tablets, or a mix), and roughly how many;
- how many students or classrooms would use it;
- how your school usually gets apps, if you know (Apple School Manager, an MDM system such as Jamf or Mosyle, purchase orders, or something else).
We read every message, and it shapes what we build next.
